Arbor Day & Free Trees Make Awesome Gifts

Just a quick post to remind everyone that Arbor day is this Friday April 29th! Recently, I went on their website Arborday.org and received 10 "free" trees (6-12") when I donated $10. You even get a choice of what types of trees you'll receive! The Donation get's you a one year membership while providing the necessary funding to keep the Arbor Day Foundation running! I can't imagine a better affordable gift for a baby shower, birthday, Mother's Day, etc. Also, once a member, you can order more trees online (3-4" tall) for decent prices. Another great gift to commemorate a birth, marriage, death, etc. Wouldn't it be cool to plant a bunch of Blue Spruces now, so that in 10 years you'll have a Christmas tree for ten straight years in a row?!

Don't forget that tomorrow we find out the gender of our child! Weigh in your guess/opinion on our poll here! I will be doing a mobile posting to update everyone as soon as we find out! Stay tuned y'all!

Finding Out The Babies Sex? Weigh in Your Opinion!

Well, should we? Make sure to weigh in your opinion by filling out a comment at the end of this post and fill out the survey to guess the gender! Hurry though, because this Friday marks the day that Christie will be having her ultrasound where we can find out the gender of the baby. As of now, our plan is to have the Dr. place the ultra sound picture with the gender results in an envelope, which we will then open among our family while out to dinner at one of our favorite local restaurants, The Quarter Bistro. As much as I would like to continue talking about The Quarter Bistro's incredible ambiance, wine list and 18 hour short ribs, I'll stick to the topic at hand. Speaking of hands, if our child ends up having a third leg, he will be the sole family member continuing on my family's namesake, Wallace. I know just what you're thinking...read on

Lions, Tigers and Groceries Oh My!

Photo courtesy of The Talking Mirror Blog. Another great grocery store post.
There are a lot of things about parenthood that could, and maybe should scare me. Maybe I'm too naive to know better. There's the 3 months of hell - a.k.a. Colic, diaper blowouts, acid reflux and of course all of your other major medical concerns. Fortunately, I've prepared myself for as much of the bad stuff as possible. You have to, right?

Most popular parenthood concerns don't even phase me, after all, I'm not your typical dude. I may have a sensitive side (White Fang makes me cry and I love cats), a keen eye for woman's fashion - read on...

Our Babymoon to Lexington & Keenland

I out-packed Christie by 12 garments
This past weekend we went on our first of two (maybe three) mini babymoons. Nothing too extravagant, yet still totally fun! We left about 7 hours later than we had planned on Saturday due to a home invasion of unicorns and flying monkeys. After I finished coaching soccer, we got on the road about 2:30pm, only to arrive in Lexington about an hour and thirty minutes later. Just in time for the rain and wind to begin. We had originally planned on leaving by 7 or 8am and get down to Lexington for breakfast, then off to Keenland for a day of gambling, drinking (for me at least), sundresses and big hats. As it turns out, waiting until Sunday was one of the many great decisions we made this trip! Read on...

Pregnancy Tip for Guys #5

The Mandle - As properly demonstrated by me.
Candles can be a man's best friend. With my new invention, unlit candles have taken on new meaning. We've all heard the nightmare stories about pregnancy gas. You can even read a past post of mine on this topic. It even includes a video! As pregnancy gas arises (hee hee), we all know how to fight back in an all out toxic gas warfare, but let's face it, two wrongs just don't make a right.

Gentleman, I give you the Mandle.
It's an unlit manly smelling candle that helps you fend off gaseous attacks from your pregnant (or not) partner when properly affixed and sealed to your face (see demonstration picture above). Read on and enter to win...

Child Birth Photography - Say Cheese!

Beautiful Beginnings Photography
Wouldn't it be great if your medical staff was also a professional photography company and they could document everything (just about everything:) that takes place the day of your child's birth? After all, you'll be somewhat preoccupied and the last think you want to worry about is smiling for a camera, right? The miracle of life and the act of giving birth is beautiful and a once in a lifetime moment. I think it ranks above a wedding day and definitely Prom! If you spend so much time documenting weddings, dances and birthday parties, why isn't there an emphasis on photographically documenting birth? Is this taboo or too personal of a matter to have a possible stranger taking pictures while your wife has her legs spread open in what may be her most vulnerable moment of her life? Hmmm. What if...

Painting Your Nursery: Mythic Non-Toxic Paint

Mythic Paints at Park + Vine - Cincinnati, OH
Did you know that the air inside your home could be more toxic than a traffic-filled Los Angeles highway during rush-hour?

I might have exaggerated or even made that statement up, but it potentially could be true, right? Household wall paints and floor waxes can emit VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) toxins for years after they have already dried. Even before the notion of having a child existed, my wife and I vowed that with our next fixer-upper home, we would make a conscious effort to minimize toxins and our environmental impact. We re-used light fixtures and cabinets, re-finished hardwood floors with water-based varnish and painted the walls, ceilings and trim with no VOC paints. Now, with an unexpected little one on the way, it's reassuring to know that we made the decisions that we did in advance.

The no VOC paint that we originally used was a brand called Fresh Air, which we bought at Home Depot. The color options were minimal and muted, but we were content with our choices. Recently, on a frequent visit to my Home Depot, I discovered that they had discontinued selling the Fresh Air product line because, "It was a crappy paint," according to the paint department employee (thanks for the heads up!). I do remember each gallon not going very far, and the paint was incredibly thick. Well, now what? Read on for a free $50 value product giveaway!

The Wifey at 17 Weeks

You may not believe this, but there are actually family members that read my blog. I know! Unfortunately, I haven't done the best job of talking about my beautiful wife and the "Birl" inside her cute little belly (that's my term for a baby we don't know the sex of yet). Aside from the weekly pictures of the growth of her belly, I snapped a couple great shots using my Android and the App. Retro Camera (An absolute must have). She is 17 weeks today.

Swedish Fish, Hot Blondes and Now This...

Polarn O. Pyret - Barefoot Mama Maternity Blouse $63.50
It's funny, I've always had a thing for the Swedes (people of Sweden for those geographically challenged), and today, I received a very nice email from a parent volunteer (Jane Nordahl) for the Swedish School for Children, Washington DC. The school is doing their Polarn O. Pyret fundraiser. Polarn O. Pyret is a well known Swedish clothing company. The fundraiser is a $40 gift certificate (basically a coupon) that you purchase for $20! That's a savings of up to 50% (for those of you who never made it past 4th grade math)!!. There's no minimum purchase, but the limit is one coupon per customer, the coupon can only be used once and only at their US online store (www.polarnopyretusa.com). Interested? First, you'll have to read on to get the coupon code!
