Child Birth Photography - Say Cheese!

Beautiful Beginnings Photography
Wouldn't it be great if your medical staff was also a professional photography company and they could document everything (just about everything:) that takes place the day of your child's birth? After all, you'll be somewhat preoccupied and the last think you want to worry about is smiling for a camera, right? The miracle of life and the act of giving birth is beautiful and a once in a lifetime moment. I think it ranks above a wedding day and definitely Prom! If you spend so much time documenting weddings, dances and birthday parties, why isn't there an emphasis on photographically documenting birth? Is this taboo or too personal of a matter to have a possible stranger taking pictures while your wife has her legs spread open in what may be her most vulnerable moment of her life? Hmmm. What if...
that person was a mother herself? What if she was an amazingly kind, respectful, creative and professional photographer? I'd venture to say that child birth photography is probably a niche market still, but I happen to know one company that could make your special day, one to remember. The company is called Beautiful Beginnings Photography, and they are located in Cincinnati, OH. The business is a joint venture between a couple of local professional photographers that fill most of their calendar shooting weddings, senior pictures, and photo shoots for national agencies. I've included a picture of their incredibly clever business logo. Check it out above. Hilarious.

Certainly, there are birth photographers in your area too, you'll just have to do a little research. Personally, I'd start by asking friends (whether it's on facebook, email or telephone) if they have any recommendations. Next, you could check out BirthPhotographers.com network, which lists them by state. Note, due to the small niche of birth photography, don't expect to find websites dedicated solely to birth photography. Often, it will be a offering you'll find within their services, capabilities or portfolio. So, you'll have to do a little surfing around.

Pricing is negotiable and depends on what exactly you want out of a days worth of a photo shoot. Everything nowadays is digital, but that doesn't mean that you can't obtain high quality prints to hand out to friends or put up on your (and grandparents) mantle. The digital photography realm offers so many more photo style capabilities, end-product options (books, dvd's, etc.) and strengthens the likelihood that out of the hundreds and thousands of digital pictures taken, you'll find more than enough photos to make it worth your money. *Note, before you book your birth photographer, make sure to get the okay from your doctor and staff.

What's your opinion on birth photography? Have you ever had it done? Would you recommend it or a particular photographer? Let me and our community know by adding a comment below! Thanks and enjoy the rest of the pictures!

  2. The examples you showed are very sensitive and artistic. I would be ok with this style of photography. You have to think about what is the purpose of the photographs. Will you really go back and watch a video of the baby emerging from the birth canal?! I can just about guarrantee that it won't be something the Grandparents put on their mantle!

    Just my thoughts......
